Are ex-nuns, ex-priests, ex-pastors (etc.) failures to their faith?

Does walking down the path of devout reverence then selfishly doing an about-face and turning back an indication that they lacked sufficient fortitude in faith? Can they be considered failures in that they didn't truly believe that their god would boost them over the adversity which caused them to backslide?
