Is the demise of the British Empire resposible for the inordinate amount of atheists it produces?

Its not because of their scientific advances, because basically that stopped after the invention of the spinning jenny. America being superior technologically to Britain still maintains a higher ratio of spiritual people than Britain does. So does British Atheism reflect their collapse of technological and scientific innovations or is it the cause?
